I've been experimenting with several of the image generation tools online. I have a Rock / Bonsai garden in the back yard in what used to be an in ground pool. The image generation tools create images based on a textual description of what you want the image to be. I asked it to create an old southern handyman in a bonsai setting... some have been pretty good and some are a bit iffy. Here is one of the better ones.

here are a few more from my experimenting...

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-24696949719168792052023-11-29T10:12:00.004-05:002023-11-29T10:17:12.261-05:00AI YodaI've been experimenting with AI... this technology is evolving at a ridiculously crazy pace... there are cloud servers in place already that are oriented towards running AI type environments... You can carry on a conversation just like in a chat message type environment with the AI character. I have created a character based on Yoda from Star Wars... he even talks like Yoda and you can customize it in more ways than you can count... all pretty amazing... It remembers your conversations and builds on them and you can discuss most anything with it and it is quite knowledgeable... I have even used it to help with Python programming issues.... It actually helped create the character for me... I just told it I wanted a character based on Yoda from Star Wars... It actually created the personality file for me which I then uploaded and was talking to Yoda in no time.

So if you have any questions for Yoda let me know š

<span face=""Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; white-space-collapse: preserve;">

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-26876045073879611772023-01-12T11:54:00.003-05:002023-02-02T06:13:59.861-05:00Overdue Road Trip

I made a long overdue road trip down to Charleston a few days ago... the weather was very nice... got up to 65 degrees three days in a row but it was a little nippy at night. I found a Tartan 33 sailboat that has been on Facebook marketplace forever and I finally got around to going down to take a look at it... it is a bit if a fixer upper but it does have some brand new sails... which is rare for a boat this age. The engine had been replaced somewhere along the way. I shot some drone video while I was there and made a short video of the marina. I used DaVince Resolve to create it. My subscription to Adobe Premiere had expired and this a free package with a ton of helpful videos on using it on youboob. I never was all that handy with the adobe stuff but all the online tutorials for the Black Magic software made it a lot less painful. I had downloaded it a while back but after I looked at it... it looked painfully not user friendly. With the expiration of my Adobe software I was motivated to try DaVinci again and found some good videos on youboob right off the bat.. there is a ton of stuff on youboob about it.
Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-11528922034517390182023-01-10T12:13:00.007-05:002023-01-27T12:24:33.467-05:00Cooper River Marina

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-53193787586266867522023-01-06T09:26:00.004-05:002023-01-06T09:40:19.124-05:00ChatGPT the new AI PortalChatGPT has only been online for a few weeks now and there are already hundreds of videos on youboob on how to make money using chatGPT and if you make the mistake of watching one you will be overwhelmed with a barrage of videos related to chatGPT. Unfortunately youboob has become so repetitive and mind numbingly boring as to suggested content that it has become one of those sites you love to hate. I think I need to ask chatGPT how to get better content to show up on youboob.

I had to try out the new chatGPT AI portal... I'm an old electronics nerd of sorts and spent a lot of money over the years on everything from Arduino to Raspberry Pi just to hit the high spots. As someone who has spent a lot of time over the years on discussion boards related to everything from homebuilt drones to electric bikes and quite a few software support sites... it was a welcome change of pace. No smart ass responses... responses were immediate and if you asked a follow up it was smart enough to know what you just asked and expand on it.

I owned a sailboat for a short time and kept it at Carolina Beach in NC. The Carolina Beach inlet has a nasty current and if you try to make the passage at the wrong time... it was a hand full to put it mildly. This sailboat under power would only do about 5 knots or so and the current could be close to that. I made the mistake once of trying to help a couple on a jetski whose engine had failed and they were it the inlet.. I attempted to tow them and it was a lost cause. We were coming in and the current was going out so we were bucking it. I had to let them go and within minutes their jetski was several hundred yards out to sea. A sea tow did rescue them in short order... and I learned I would never try that again.

I asked the AI portal to write me a story of a rescue gone bad in the Carolina Beach inlet... it was not particularly creative but it was an interesting experiment... I went from that to asking it to create the code for a web page that would run on a Raspberry Pi that would allow you to upload a file to the server. That was much more in its element I think... and it was able to expand on the details when asked... and it remembered what you and it had already said. So if you are bored and want to try it out here it is... chatGPT but I'll warn you ahead of time if watch any youboob videos about it... you will be inundated with all sorts of videos telling you how to make money and all sorts of other things using chatGPT.

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-60967921416889518282022-08-27T14:32:00.022-04:002022-11-19T13:37:31.950-05:00Those were the daysOnce upon a time the internet was more adventurous and filled with surprise. Not long ago I googled Dave Smith... he was mentioned in some political based commentary and I had never heard of him so I went looking. I found Dave Smith but probably not the one they were referring to... he was said to be the father of MIDI and heavily involved in the early development of music synthesizers and had recently passed away.

MIDI was the musical instrument digital interface and allowed one keyboard to control another through this interface. It also allows a computer to control multiple keyboards. He developed the first polyphonic synthesizer. One that could play more than one note at a time. I bought an Ensonic SQ80 around 1986 that was the the latest thing in 8 bit analog synthesizers. It could play eight notes at once and each sound like totally different instruments. It is the same vintage as the Roland D50 and had a bunch of cool features. It had a sequencer which could record your key strokes in real time and then you could play it back and play along with what you had recorded. It had midi and could control instruments as well. It was limited by the processing power of an 8 bit microprocessor.

Now days we have 64 bit processors with 8 cores in cell phones.
I used to enjoy the randomness of youboob and the internet as well where you would find interesting things with no connection with what you might have been looking for without even trying. Now on youboob the majority of what shows up is something directly related to what ever you just watched and you will be hard pressed to find anything that is not related to something you just watched. I'm referring primarily to when you're logged in to youboob and go to your home page and the recommended videos that show up there are mind numbingly boring and repetitive. I suppose I'm giving away that I probably spend way too much time on youboob. Perhaps its youboob's way of trying to wean me... that or hope that I will subscribe to youboob for the real experience.

I'm not that great of a musician but I really do enjoy playing along with songs on youtube... either on the bass guitar or on a Roland D50 that I now own.
My dad taught me to play the mandolin and the guitar long ago. I miss him greatly and the randomness of the early days of the internet... RIP Dave and Dad.

This pic from about 1975 or so

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-83491324408954894892022-05-19T14:58:00.006-04:002022-05-19T17:27:17.564-04:001930 Chrysler
Its not often that you see a 1930 Chrysler this nice... let alone get a chance to drive it. I got a new drone that I've managed to get past the first few flights without any unfortunate incidents... hope it stays that way. I recently posted this pic on the Friends of the Tygerberry Landing which is on Berry's Pond. I grew up on the banks of the Middle Tyger River in Turkeypaw... actually Tucapau aka Startex. A little mill town that no longer has a mill. Back in the day it had its own hydro electric generator and there was also one at Berry's pond. I have a page about the old power plant at Berry's Pond.

Berry's Pond is on the South Tyger River and Tygerberry Landing is a site that is open to the public and if you are into canoeing or kayaking you can paddle upstream there and quickly enter into a window back in time as there is very little development on the river. There are a couple of access points in Duncan as well though I'm told there is a log jam just below the access point at Beech Springs in Duncan. I hope to help in a project to clear the log jam there so you can put in there and take out at Berry's Pond.

Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-25874182465430263632022-01-23T15:31:00.105-05:002022-03-18T14:31:06.878-04:00120 Year Old Shotgun

It's not often you get to work on something that's over 100 years old... but this Remington Arms 12 gauge double barrel shotgun with the home defense barrel is close to 120 years old and has an added customization of 1928 and 1941 Mercury dimes inset into the stock.

This one belongs to a good friend of mine who routinely has me working on very old things that are in his collection. He has had it for quite some time but recently decided to try to shoot it and found that it was very difficult to move the safety to off... it didn't help that the serrations that are supposed to give it grip are very worn. I reduced the tension on the spring on the right as that was what was making the safety so hard to move.

It also serves to remind me just how old I'm getting. Stitch and glue type boats like this one used to be kind of new... 30 or more years ago... I've always been of bit of a boat nut and followed Phil Bolger and Dynamite Payson and a bunch of other folks that were designing boats made using this technique. One that I always admired was the Whisp by Steve Redmond. I found one last fall that was again on the NC Coast near Wilmington, NC. It was late in the season when I bought it and just put it in the water for the first time this year.

My folks had a place on the lake when I was growing up and helped my dad build two boats. The destination for this trip was to Bath NC which was the home of Blackbeard. It is a very small town on the Pamlico River which is part of the Pamlico sound... a huge area protected by the outer banks. Lots of farmland once you get away from the coast. There was one plant in abundance that was in bloom that I did not recognize. Turns out it was cotton. One for the record booksI went to Myrtle Beach... Ocean Lakes to be exact... thanks to a freebie place to stay for a few days. My first time there and the first time to Myrtle Beach this century. I really don't remember the last time I was there but most of my coastal adventures in recent years have been to the NC Coast. Beaufort, Oriental, New Bern and a few others. There is a huge procession of golf carts of all kinds each evening. Here are a few pics from this trip that I call
I've been watching some of Ken Burns Country Music episodes... and one that particularly resonates with me covers the 68 to 72 time frame. It covers my high school days and just after and is now over 50 years ago. It covers part of the Vietnam era... it covers Kris Kristofferson's early days, Bob Dylan in Nashville playing with Johnny Cash. Early days of Willie Nelson when he wore suits and had funny hair. It winds up with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Will the Circle be Unbroken. It seems so long ago and it seems like only yesterday. A time when I knew it all and thought I would live forever.... and now when I realize how little I know and wonder where the time went and just how much longer I'll be around.
It was a little on the toasty side and the ground was a bit too hard for a lot of the teams including the team owned by the school. It was supposed to be their last event but they stayed in the barn I reckon. There were a few teams that did a little clod busting for the folks who showed up.
Thats why they call them hit and miss engines.

It's on what's left of an old Economy Tractor. We'll have this thing popping and hopping real soon. These things are a blast to hear run. They are quite primitive with nothing mechanical operating the intake valve. The only thing that opens it is the vacuum created by the intake stroke thats sucks the valve open and draws in air and gasoline.

It has a governor that controls the speed of the engine by holding the exhaust valve open and the engine freewheels until it slows down enough to let the exhaust valve operate. It will then fire once or twice and go back to coasting. That's where the hit and miss moniker comes from.Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-87283755624302242392019-01-07T12:13:00.002-05:002019-05-23T22:06:38.445-04:00A Ride Back in TimeMy friend Clarence recently acquired this very cool truckā¦ which I actually found on facebook ads. Working on the ahooogah hornā¦amazing that you can get new brushes for that right online. Didnāt need brushes thoughā¦ it has an ungrounded motor inside and requires two leads to make it workā¦ it was missing one but still had the original connectors insideā¦ quite amazing.
I'm going to end 2018 about the same way I started this year with a return to the handyman proa. It been taking up space in a shop that belongs to my good friend Clarence Gibbs. The shop now has heat and air and a pretty good start on the tools needed to become the center of handyman festivities. I need to make a call on the proa project to either get it on the water or get it out of the way and move on to something else. I'm moving my home automation related posts to Electrick Handyman. I recently discovered upython that can be installed on ESP 32 and the 8266. I also finally broke down and got a Raspberry Pi... it's a full blown computer on a card with a linux variant operating system and it can run a program called Node-Red which is a cool tool for allowing the ESP 32 and other devices to communicate with each other using the mosquito or mqtt protocol. I will be posting updates on that undertaking on Electrick Handyman as well.Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-61934470723472417242018-09-10T09:09:00.001-04:002022-11-19T08:14:14.881-05:0021st Century MappingItās been quite a few years now since I first discovered a site called DIYDronesā¦ do it yourself drones. Those early drones were virtually all scratch built and used Arduino microprocessors for stabilization and control. The evolution of drone technology in the time since has been quite remarkable.
Drones that can fly a predetermined course using GPS way points are now commonplaceā¦ as is their capability to take very high resolution pictures and videos complete with GPS coordinates embedded into the pictures. This results in a platform that can provide the data for creating high resolution topographic maps with elevation data in a fraction of the time required by more conventional methods.

I'm in the process of putting together an entry level but high powered Terrain mapping package for the purpose of creating contour line maps and other topographic products focused on the grading and civil engineering industry. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro pro which has a camera with a 1 inch 20 megapixel sensor and a mechanical shutter capable of centimeter level resolution.
A long time fan or Open Source software... I'm running a package called OpenDroneMap

I'm still learning my way around there... it is a an impressive piece of work... it's prompted me to get back into under the hood tinkering with Ubuntu and server based tools. If you are in the Greenville Spartanburg area and have some interest in this project I would love to here from you. I'm planning to be at the next local meeting of the Python user groups in both Spartanburg and Greenville.

They both use Meetups to keep their members connected and informed... check it out š

Stay tuned for updates on this venture into 21st century mapping.
I would like to thank all of you that have allowed me to be your handyman. One of my more interesting encounters led to my discovery of the Cottonwood Trail on Lawsons Fork Creek. It seems I'm becoming more connected to this creek.. It seems to be everywhere I'm fond of frequenting. I enjoy riding a motorcycle and often ride on Hanging Rock road which borders the creek there at Valley Falls. It also borders the property at USC Upstate... its not so obvious there but I recently discovered that there are some nice trails alongside the creek there. Most recently I discovered the Cottonwood Trail by accident... I have a customer whose property is very close to the creek in the Fernwood area. After finishing a job there I saw a sign for the trail and decided to check it out. It is a 115 acre preserve complete with a boardwalk and nice trails in the heart of Spartanburg... if you've never been there you should check it out.
The ESP32 connects to your local WiFi network and then you can connect via your cell phone or your computer or tablet and control eight devices. These are hard wired to an eight relay device which you can see in my previous post. The ESP32 serves up the webpage and switches the eight relays which are in turn wired to the devices you want to control. Virtually all of my lighting is led types. In my shed / shop area I have at least ten led light fixtures all on one circuit. I checked the load with an amp meter and it was less than two amps. The relay switches are rated for 10 amps so no problem there.
Many of the components can be used with the Alexa and similar devices. I picked up a couple of the Echo Dot 2nd generation devices and have some of the remote control devices that work with it on the way. I can see where this thing might be a bit addictive as well as being capable of some pretty sophisticated uses.

I picked up one of these ESP32 boards and it's what got me on the home automation bandwagon. I didn't really know much about it when I bought it but in researching some of its capabilities I learned that it and its predecessor the ESP8266 can be used as a remote device to be controlled by an Alexa. The 32 board is still pretty bleeding edge but has a ton of capability. It has both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and a great deal of information about them is available on the web.

It was a fairly easy undertaking to set up the ESP32 device as a webserver on my home wifi network that can control via a web page... 8 relays that can control lights or other low current devices.

Control by Alexa is not so well supported on the ESP32 but there are many examples using the ESP8266. I have a couple of them on the way.

I also have some Sonoff devices on the way as well that work with the Alexa or with a phone app right off the shelf.

I will be posting more on this undertaking as these parts arrive and get put online.
Made a little smoke yesterday with the old Allis Chalmers G model. I had done a valve job on it...
the block looks a bit like a 4 cylinder Briggs and Stratton with the valves in the block. Got the head back on yesterday and tried it with a little starting fluid just to see if it would fire. Put a new gas line on it and it fired right up... purred like a kitten.Shadetree Handymanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07979652440059837351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-771288748738536533.post-18630928155966573472018-01-01T08:32:00.001-05:002018-03-16T07:31:12.735-04:00New Years ResolutionI've not done very much posting here this past year... I'm hoping to step up my game a little... reconnected with an old friend of mine who wants to get a 29 model A Ford peach flat back into running condition. He's pretty serious about it and has even had heat and air installed in the shop where we will be working on it. Its a very nice place with a great view of Glassy Mountain.
A lot of folks learned to drive in one of these things back in the day. Its a custom flat bed that was used to haul peaches out of the orchard back when peaches were a big deal in Upstate South Carolina.
I don't think it needs a whole lot ... you sit on the wooden flat bed to drive.
